Eating organically is more nutritious than traditional food and it may lengthen your life span by preventing an array of diseases linked to exposure to harmful pesticides and herbicides.* Organic fruits and vegetables are free of pesticides and do not undergo a process called irradiation. This process extends the life of fruits and vegetables, but can be very bad for the human body. Some irradiation methods even involve radioactive substances! Now that’s something to really think about.
Therefore, eating organically is always better for you, but there are certain fruits and vegetables that you should only consider buying organically due to higher levels of pesticides. Here are four of the top ones to avoid:
Strawberries are one of the fruits with the highest levels of pesticides and should be completely avoided unless organically bought. Sixty-five different herbicides, fungicides and pesticides are registered for use on strawberries in the U.S. alone. There’s even a long standing joke between organic growers that non-organic strawberries might as well be ground up and used as a pesticide, because they are so full of chemicals. You will probably never look at strawberries the same way again after knowing this!
Whenever we think of spinach we think of Popeye and his incredible strength after consuming spinach. Whilst spinach is full of vitamins and minerals and incredibly nutritious for you, it might not even be worth eating unless you go for the organic kind. More than 60% of non-organic spinach contains pesticide, according to the FDA. These include DDT (depending on where it’s grown), permethrin and other highly toxic pesticides. I always say, if you can’t pronounce it, avoid it!
Cherries are not only delicious for us, but they pose a delicious meal to a variety of bugs and insects too. For this reason, growers treat orchards with a variety of pesticides. After harvest, cherries show the presence of more than 20 different pesticide residues.
In tests undertaken by the FDA, celery is more likely than any other vegetable to contain pesticide residue, a whopping 82% of samples tested positive!
These are just a few of the top fruits and vegetables to avoid, but overall eating organically is a lifestyle choice that will only benefit you (and the planet) and help you live a long, healthy and happy life!
