Calendula Oil: Skin Benefits and Uses

The name calendula refers to 15-20 different species of an annual flower native to Western Europe, the Mediterranean, and southern Asia. The Ancient Egyptians used calendula in folk medicine, due to its remarkable power to heal almost everything – from burns and wound, to stomach pain and inflammations. Even nowadays, both traditional and alternative medicine, recognize calendula as potent natural medicine that can help with various health conditions.

What about the skin? How does calendula help your skin stay youthful and healthy? The delicate fiery red and yellow flowers of calendula are a rich source of incredibly potent skin-healing compounds and bio-active ingredients. Want to learn more about them? Stay with us!

Bio-Active Compounds Found in Calendula

Calendula officinalis (also known as garden marigold) is the most common species within the Calendula genus. Out of 66 components found in Calendula officinalis, the flavonoids (the ones that give the flower its pretty, bright colour) are considered to be the most potent ones. Flavonoids possess remarkable antioxidant activity + prevent and reduce inflammation, by inhibiting certain enzymes, involved in skin’s inflammatory response.

Other bio-active compounds found in Calendula officinalis include carotenoids, mucilage, polysaccharides, resin, aromatic plant acids, saponins, sterols, and glycosides.

All of these compounds are extracted from the flower tops, via oil or alcohol extraction, or alternatively – via steam distillation.

How Does Calendula Benefit Your Skin?

From baby lotions and cleansing creams, to wrinkle-reducing serums and facial oils, calendula is everywhere. Calendula oil and/or calendula extract can be found in a huge percentage of the products available on the market today, and there are many reasons why skin care manufacturers love the brightly-coloured flower so much. Below are just a few…

Effective Natural Moisturizer

Thanks to its excellent emollient properties, calendula oil works wonders for dry, dehydrated and chapped skin. It helps restore skin’s water balance and improves moisture retention, by replenishing skin’s lipid barrier. Intact lipid barrier = dewy-looking skin, glowing with health.

Anti-Aging Properties

The oil has positive effect on aging and thinning skin, making it thicker and plumper, which further helps eliminate expression lines and other annoying signs of aging. Additionally, the plant is believed to stimulate the production of collagen and improve skin’s elasticity and firmness. Since the oil itself is very mild, it can be applied even around the eyes, where the skin is more delicate and often prone to irritations.
