Hyaluronic Acid

When it comes to selecting skincare, we’re all searching for that elusive product that will deliver a smooth, glowy, well-hydrated complexion.

And while there are a myriad of ingredients and products on the market these days that promise to achieve this – there is one ingredient that stands above the rest: hyaluronic acid. Scientifically proven for its skin-loving benefits, hyaluronic acid can now be found in beauty supplements, injectables, and topical products and it’s undoubtedly worth adding to your skincare regime. Here’s why...

WHAT IS HYALURONIC ACID?

Naturally produced by our bodies, hyaluronic acid (HA) is a molecule that helps our connective tissues retain moisture – and it’s estimated that as much as half of the hyaluronic acid in our bodies is present in our skin. However, just as our ability to synthesise collagen and elastin – the proteins which support our skin’s strength and structure – declines as we age, so too does our ability to produce hyaluronic acid. Environmental factors such as sun exposure and pollution can also contribute to declining levels of hyaluronic acid – as well as premature ageing – which is why applying it topically can be of great benefit.

SKIN HEALTH BENEFITS

1. Combats dryness

For healthy, youthful-looking skin, hydration is key. While drinking plenty of filtered water each day will help to ensure your cells stay hydrated from the inside-out, topical application of hyaluronic acid can also assist in combating dryness. As hyaluronic acid is a humectant – with the ability to hold up to 1000 times its weight in water – when applied topically, it binds to water, creating a natural barrier and locking moisture into your skin. The result? A fresh and dewy-looking complexion.

2. Helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles

Sufficient hydration is also essential when it comes to reducing the effects of premature ageing – including fine lines and wrinkles – as dehydrated skin can appear both dull and lacklustre. The application of hyaluronic acid, however, has been scientifically proven to help combat fine lines and wrinkles, supporting skin structure and improving skin elasticity and firmness, when applied regularly. By nourishing the skin on a cellular level, HA works to plump the skin and restore its moisture levels.

3. Expediates wound healing

HA also speeds up wound healing due to its antibacterial properties – as well as its ability to combat inflammation, ensuring the skin is able to repair itself more quickly. It does this by encouraging cell regeneration, helping to reduce the effects of scarring and surface inflammation for smoother, more resilient skin.

The great news is, too, that all skin types can reap the rewards of hyaluronic acid – making it the perfect ingredient to add to your skincare regime.
