The Dangers of Regular Skincare

I am not the
type of person to say “This is bad for you, don’t do it!” (even when, deep
inside of me, I know it is). I believe in freedom of choice and I think that since we
are rational beings and we have the ability to think and analyze, we always
make the best choices for us (seen as “best” from our own perspective).

I love
skincare and makeup and I’ve always been fascinated by taking care of my skin
and experimenting with my looks. I just
enjoy it – applying my eye cream, right after the moisturizing toner and the nourishing cream – it’s like a special ritual for me. For years I’ve been convinced that expensive, luxurious products, with glossy packaging are the ultimate solution for all of my skincare issues and that
they are doing
good to my skin
.
While I was at the university, doing my
degree in Molecular Biology & Biochemistry, I started my own research
about the most widely used ingredients in skincare. I wanted to know how they
work and what they do on cellular level i.e how they help my skin (
if you want to read more about my “findings”, check our our weekly newsletter). Little by little, along with all info
about their “benefits” I started finding out facts that the cosmetic
manufacturers do not tell us about. Like, for example, the fact that a high
percentage of the ingredients used in personal care products are not
even tested for safety and there are no strict
regulatory procedures when it comes to what goes into your shampoo. Doesn’t sound right, does it?

We are constantly
convinced by the media and the skillful marketers that we “deserve” good
skincare! Okay, but how “good” it actually is? In her post
“Do you use cosmetics? Read this.” Alice Nicholls quotes one of the most popular
sentences we hear in skincare ads:

Because
you’re worth it
, you can buy an anti-aging cream that includes: …”

Right after that comes the typical ingredient list of an average anti-aging cream. One
of the ingredients we find there is
formaldehyde – compound, used to
embalm dead bodies, proven to be highly
toxic and also – cancerogenic. Hmm, I think I am “worth” a little bit more than that. And as much as I want to believe that something used
to preserve a dead body will “preserve” my skin just as good, I don’t want to. There
must be other alternatives. Less harmful ones.

As Alice mentions
our skin is semi-permeable, which means, that even
though is serves as protective shield, it also allows certain chemicals to pass
through it and reach the bloodstream.
I don’t think I need carcinogenic substances
travelling through my body, even if they are supposed to “preserve” my skin. I’ll preserve it with something else – something more natural and
organic, something that will not poison my body, but rather than that – will help my skin heal on its own.

There is one
more thing that I strongly believe in and the way Alice ends her post, once again, proves my point.

“Our lives and heads
are busy places. We often cannot see further than the hand we reach with to
pluck something off the shelve. We are not conscious of the processes anymore.
We often cannot see past our desire to believe what shiny advertisements and airbrushed
models tell us is possible to ‘fix’ us or to help us not become ‘less than’.”

Because the
truth is – there is always an alternative. You just have to look for it.
