If you’re new to the world of face oils, then your skin could be missing out on some serious nourishment. While moisturisers undoubtedly deliver a burst of hydration to your skin—a hardworking facial oil can truly transform your skin.
Penetrating deep into the dermis, face oils are like supercharged moisturisers, boasting benefits that are able to target your specific skin concerns and deliver age-defying results. At LAMAV, we’ve been fond of face oils since day one—understanding that they are the perfect vehicle to harness the powers of our potent bio-actives so that your skin receives pure nourishment.
But, we’ve found that many people are still unsure of how to choose the right facial oil and don’t know how to incorporate into their existing beauty routine. There has also been a long-standing misconception that oily or combination skin types shouldn’t use face oils. To debunk some of these myths and help you select the perfect oil for you, here’s our comprehensive guide…
Which Oil Should I be Using?
What’s first important to understand is that our skin naturally produces oil—it’s what keeps our complexion clear, healthy and plump. But when our skin becomes depleted of oil—due to age or environmental factors such as sun damage and pollution—this can contribute to skin issues including fine lines and wrinkles, as well as breakouts and pigmentation. By adding a face oil into our routine however, we can maintain our skin’s healthy balance, lock in moisture and protect it from free radical and environmental damage.
While it’s important to consider both your skin type, as well as the concerns you’re most looking to address when selecting a face oil—all skin types will benefit from lighter blends that are derived from plants as these smaller molecules are more easily absorbed and able to penetrate the outer layers of the skin.
● Dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin types should opt for omega-rich oils—such as our Omega 3, 6, 7 & 9 Antioxidant Oil which contains 100% pure actives to strengthen and repair the skin’s delicate lipid barrier. Essential fatty acids from Chia Seed, Macadamia and Sandalwood Seed Oils nourish the skin on a cellular level, protect against free radical damage, speed up skin repair and boost elasticity. Chia Seed Oil has also been clinically proven to significantly increase skin hydration and reduce transepidermal water loss while the addition of Bisabolol in this formula works to soothe irritated, red and ruddy skin—a common affliction for those with dry and sensitive skin. This soothing bio-active derives from chamomile and aside from its impressive antioxidant profile, it also reduces pigmentation by lightening and brightening skin.
● Contrary to popular belief, oily and combination skin types do not need to steer clear of face oils. In fact, oily or acne prone skin is often indicative of overactive oil glands which can benefit from lighter oils which help to diminish your skin’s own production of oil, as well as blends which contain ingredients that help to combat acne-causing bacteria. LA MAV’s Vitamin A Repair Oil, for example, repairs and renews skin. Bakuchiol—a plant-derived alternative to retinol—not only exhibits incredible anti-ageing benefits, reducing fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation—but studies also show that bakuchiol may be an effective treatment for acne as it down-regulates the production of sebum, while its antibacterial qualities also assist in diminishing the bacteria that contribute to breakouts. Other potent bio-actives in this formula—including Sea Buckthorn and Baobab Oils—are also great for oily skin types due to their non-clogging properties. Containing high levels of anti-inflammatory linoleic acid which has been shown to reduce sebum production in the skin, both Sea Buckthorn and Baobab Oils also assist with skin repair and cell renewal, for a clearer, smoother, plumper complexion.
● For ageing skin, face oils are the holy grail as our ability to produce oil naturally declines with age—so bolstering our skin’s delicate lipid barrier becomes even more important. If fine lines and wrinkles are a concern, our Vitamin A Repair Oil will become your skincare secret weapon. Rich in plant-derived vitamin A from Bakuchiol, Raspberry Seed and Sweet Almond Oils—this formula combats dryness whilst increasing cellular turnover and fighting the signs of photo-ageing. Working synergistically to not only nourish and hydrate your skin but also boost collagen synthesis for a visibly more youthful complexion—compounds including ellagic acid (found in Raspberry Seed Oil) help to reduce collagen degradation as well as the inflammation that contributes to photo-ageing and wrinkles.
Another common concern for many women, including ageing skin types, is pigmentation—which requires a supercharged dose of antioxidants to brighten and lighten. Enter our Vitamin C Brightening Oil! Containing 10% vitamin C and loaded with bio-actives that work synergistically to gently lighten skin pigmentation, this nourishing oil delivers age-defying results. Lycopene and beta carotene—from Rosehip and Pomegranate Seed Oils—reduce skin pigmentation, while studies also show that rosehip can inhibit the production of MMP-1, the enzyme which breaks down collagen in the body.
How to Incorporate Face Oils Into Your Routine
Once you’ve selected your face oil, the next question becomes how to incorporate it into your existing beauty routine. There are a number of theories as to how to layer your products—but to get the most out of the bio-actives in each formula, we recommend applying 2–3 drops of your face oil directly to freshly cleansed and toned skin before moisturising. This ensures that the maximum benefits of each ingredient are able to penetrate deep into your skin, nourishing your skin on a cellular level. Applying moisturiser after your face oil also helps to lock in that extra burst of hydration. To boost the benefits of your face oil even further, incorporating facial massage using our Ayurvedic Kansa Wand can capture that in-spa luxe feel in your very own home. Used for centuries to help unblock energy channels, rebalance and restore the body’s natural healing mechanisms—the Kansa Wand boosts circulation and lymphatic drainage which flushes the skin with fresh, oxygenated blood—promoting collagen synthesis, reducing under-eye puffiness, firming and toning skin.
Simply apply your LA MAV facial oil to cleansed skin, then begin at your forehead using small, firm, circular strokes to massage down one side of the face before moving to the other. Use gentle circular motions around the eyes, then sweeping upwards, outwards strokes across the cheekbones, jawline and up the neck for an instant, visible lift.
