INGREDIENT SPECIFIC FAQ’S

Do La Mav products contain palm oil?
La Mav do not use Palm Oil in any of our products. However, some of the ingredients may have derivatives of Palm Oil, used in the process of extraction. All suppliers of the ingredients in our products must submit a RSPO Certificate to state the palm oil derivatives are from established sustainable farms. The only two ingredients in our products, which may use palm oil derivatives in their extraction, are:1) Cetearyl Glucose, Cetearyl Alcohol2) Glyceryl Stearate Citrate

Why don’t La Mav skincare products contain any sunscreen?

La Mav skincare products are for use morning and night whereas a sunscreen should be used every 3 hours depending on the SPF factor. We strongly recommend using La Mav Makeup that provides a light physical barrier (SPF 15) in either mineral or BB crème form and can be reapplied as necessary throughout the day.

How can La Mav be suitable for all skin types?

Firstly, our ingredients are carefully selected. They help restore skin’s natural balance and at the same time do not irritate sensitive skin.Secondly, La Mav uses CERTIFIED ORGANIC ingredients in their purest, natural form and we do not use ANY synthetic ingredients. This makes our Anti-ageing range unique and suitable for all skin types. As with any new product, if your skin is sensitive we recommend doing a patch test before using any product.

Why doesn’t La Mav use Aqua or Water in any of their products?

Another feature which makes us unique: we believe in incorporating maximum therapeutic ingredients into our products. We use Certified Organic Hydrosols as a substitute for water alongside Aloe Vera Leaf Juice to form the vehicle or base throughout our skin care range. The hydrosols possess the same therapeutic and medicinal properties as their counterpart essential oils.Note: Since some of the bio-actives we incorporate in our formulas are extracted with water, we are obliged to list "water"  on certain ingredients lists. Nevertheless, this doesn't mean the product itself contains water.

What is the % of Vitamin C that La Mav uses in its formulations?

All products from the Skin Brightening Range contain 3% vitamin C.We use Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate - one of the most stable and potent forms of vitamin C.

What preservatives do La Mav Use?

La Mav uses only the highest quality natural preservation system. To maintain this high quality standard our products are tested according to the British Pharmacopoeial test. Our products are quality tested at every level from the sourcing of ingredients, the production process right through to the packaging. We have taken this integrity further by also utilising selected airless pump packs and tubes for our packaging. This method helps preserve the products and reduce the introduction of air borne organisms, dust and other contaminants.

PRODUCT SPECIFIC FAQ’s

What are the benefits of essential oils in skin care?

Essential oils are derived from the different parts of plants – flowers, leaves, bark, seeds, roots, wood and fruits. They have been used for many years for their therapeutic benefits, namely:

• Anti-ageing

• Stimulate local circulation

• Anti-inflammatory

• Antiseptic and anti-fungal

• Skin penetration

Why are artificial colours or fragrances bad for the skin?

Skin care products should not contain artificial/synthetic fragrances or colours as they have no therapeutic value. Many fragrances are produced from ingredients that are cheap and known to be toxic or carcinogenic (have the potential to cause cancer). Skin is the largest organ of the body: anything you put on it can be easily absorbed through the pores and into the blood stream. When you use skin care products, they are applied all over the face, neck, and body. This covers a lot of surface area and, therefore, a great deal of chemical absorption occurs (Source – www.ewg.org). Artifical colours or fragrances are also commonly known to cause allergies and sensitivities.La Mav products are 100% natural and Certified Organic and will never contain artificial or synthetic colours or fragrances.

What are Polyethylene Glycols?

Polyethylene Glycols are used as synthetic emulsifiers, humectants, cleansing agents or surfactants in conventional skincare products e.g. baby lotions, deodorants, moisturisers, anti-Itch creams, lip balms etc. These compounds are potentially carcinogenic petroleum ingredients that can alter and reduce the skin’s natural moisture factor whilst increasing the appearance of ageing and leaving you more vulnerable to bacteria. They are known irritants and cause delayed hypersensitivities and contact dermatitis. They are also found to be contaminated with the impurities e.g. 1,4-dioxane, heavy metals e.g. arsenic, lead which are linked to causing cancer (Source – www.ewg.org). The PEG compounds can also open the pores of the skin allowing the toxins and microorganisms to enter the skin causing acne.

What are petrochemicals and why are they not good for our skin?

Petrochemicals (like mineral oil, petrolatum, petroleum jelly, liquid paraffin) are a by-product of the petroleum industry: they come from crude oil and are used in products as an emollient, giving a “slip and slide” property to a product. They are used in personal care products such as lipsticks, lubricants, baby massage oils etc because they are incredibly cheap. Also used by industry as metal-cutting fluid (Source – www.ewg.org).Petrochemicals contain cancer-causing contaminants also known as carcinogens. Furthermore, mineral oil prevents the skin from “breathing when applied.” As such, it clogs pores, interferes with your skin’s natural ability to eliminate toxins, and can lead to acne flare-ups. Also, it is irritating to the skin and if used for any length of time, your skin can become dependent on it, causing chapping and dryness. Lastly, it can lead to premature ageing of the skin.1,4-Dioxane is another petroleum-derived carcinogenic compound that is used intentionally in dry cleaning solvents, lacquers and automotive coolant. 1,4-Dioxane also shows up in personal care products because it is the byproduct of some chemical ingredient manufacturing processes, including the process by which sodium lauryl sulfate becomes sodium laureth sulfate (Source – www.safecosmetics.org).

What are parabens and why are they harmful?

Parabens are a group of chemicals that are known as synthetic preservatives in many conventional cosmetic products so that their products can have a long shelf life. Common parabens include methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and ethylparaben. The reason is purely economical. However, studies suggest that they may cause cancer and interfere with the body’s endocrine system, as well as causing allergic reactions and skin rashes. Parabens are absorbed through intact skin and from the gastrointestinal tract and blood. U.K. researchers found measurable concentrations of six different parabens in 20 human breast tumors. The study highlights the need for more research on the potential link between products containing parabens and increased breast cancer risk (Source – www.safecosmetics.org).

How can I avoid these chemicals in skincare products?

Read the labels very carefully and only choose those products that do not contain any of the prohibitive chemicals. Secondly for your own peace of mind look for the seal of various Certification bodies on the labels. We are proud to announce that La Mav is:

• Free from all nasty chemicals

• Has OFC Certification and carry their seal on all our labels

• Signatory and Member of Campaign for safe cosmetics (www.safecosmetics.org

What causes ageing?

Skin ageing is natural and occurs due to many factors. They may be external (environmental e.g. pollution, UV exposure etc.) or from internal origin (hormonal imbalance, stress, diet etc). Whatever their origin, they lead to a loss of skin elasticity. Internal ageing begins at 20-25 years of age, but external ageing begins way before that due to the environmental stresses. To combat internal ageing it is very important to follow a healthy lifestyle nourishing your body inside and out.

What should I use to protect my skin from environmental damage?

As we step into our 20s and 30s, the products we use in our teenage years are no longer suitable for the skin. We recommend using products to combat environmental factors such as UV damage, dirt/dust/smoke.La Mav solutions:o Cleanse and Tone your skin twice daily to get rid of the dead layer of cells and pollutants.o Follow with Wrinkle Smoother Complex in the morning and Night repair Formula at night to hydrate and protect the skin.o The area around the eyes need special attention as the stress of work, late nights and over work can cause under eye bags and dark circles to appear very quickly.

When can I expect to start seeing improvement on my skin?

Your skin will start feeling soft and supple instantly. When the correct regimen is followed with La Mav products you will start noticing the positive changes in your skin within 1-2 weeks. With continued use the anti-ageing effects are visible within 1-2 months (click here to see the benefits of our active ingredients).

CERTIFICATION FAQ’s

What is the main difference between ‘Natural’ and ‘Organic’ ingredients?

The ‘natural’ ingredients are unaltered, untreated, are not artificial and have nature as the ingredients’ source. An organic certification body ensures that the organic ingredients are cultivated without using synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and other synthetic chemicals. An organic ingredient is a natural ingredient cultivated without synthetic chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides; but a natural ingredient may not necessarily be organic.

How Would I Know Whether A Product Is Certified Organic?

Look for the organic certification seal from one of many organizations throughout the world. If the products are organic and natural, it should carry a certification from a certifying body. In Australia the following organizations certify organic products:

• OFC (Organic Food Chain)

• NASAA (National Association for Sustainable Agriculture)

• OGA (Organic Growers of Australia)

Read the label very carefully. Check out the ingredients list and note the first three listed as these usually form the base of the product.

The Benefits of Certified Organic ingredients:

GOOD FOR US

The ingredients are extracted naturally in a way that their purity and potency is not compromised. Studies have shown that organic ingredients contain more potent vitamins, essential fatty acids, anti-oxidants and other nutrients than non-organic. Organic systems prohibit the use of artificial chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers. Certified Organic products are produced without genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which are prohibited in the standards for organic food and farming.GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

The organic farming system helps with the replenishment of the soil from natural organic matter. It prevents damage to our environment through the elimination of harsh chemicals prevalent in conventional agriculture which leak into our waterways. Organic systems ensure sustainable farming, which reduces dependence on non-renewable resources. Organic production supports sustainability, the management of the environment and wildlife as a priority.
