What is Rosa Damascena?
With a rich history of use in beauty products, food and drinks, this fragrant liquid is produced by distilling rose petals with steam. It is thought to have originated in Iran, where it was used for thousands of years as a medicine. Boasting powerful anti-inflammatory properties, rose flower water has been shown to inhibit the enzymes that break down collagen and elastin, thereby reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps to reduce redness and calm the complexion.
The Beauty Benefits Of Rosa Damascena
Since ancient times roses have been a symbol of femininity and purity. Nevertheless, they are not just pretty flowers. Due to their numerous therapeutic benefits, roses are widely used in the beauty industry.
There are two main types of products obtained from roses, ones that are used for the formulation of skin care products – rose essential oil and rose hydrosol (also known as hydrolat). The hydrosol is a by-product from the steam distillation of rose oil, and even though it's diluted, compared to the oil, it works wonders for the skin when applied topically.
Let us tell you a bit more.
Reduces Inflammation
Rose extract contains more than 100 different compounds, some of which are believed to have antiseptic properties. Rose Damascena distillate (also known as rose water) reduces inflammation by suppressing the growth of certain types of bacteria.
Rose Damascena has mild astringent properties and can be used as a toner for oily skin, prone to acne. Rose water refreshes the skin without stripping it of natural oils (a common problem with alcohol-containing toners).

Prevents Premature Ageing
Rosa extract's excellent moisturizing properties are the reason why Rose Water appears on the ingredients lists of many natural facial serums and toners designed to provide a boost of hydration. When applied topically, rose water eliminates dullness and instantly refreshes your complexion. Rose oil and rose distillate are rich in antioxidants – molecules that protect the cells from oxidative stress and help your skin stay youthful and healthy. Rose water is also rich in vitamins and minerals that play a key role in the synthesis of collagen and elastin.
