Healthy Oils for Hair & Skin

Oils have been touted as the new ‘in thing’ for your skin and while oil may terrify you if you tend to suffer from oily skin or breakouts, don’t give up on them entirely just yet! If you use the right oil for your skin type you will begin to experience the incredible beauty benefits including anti-aging effects, adding a gorgeous glow and even preventing acne! Yes, you read correctly, some oils can actually prevent those nasty breakouts that last well beyond teenage years. I’m speaking from experience…shhh.

The other great thing about oils is that they are typically found in organic products which means that there are no harmful additives or chemicals added. Read on to find out the beauty benefits of 5 of these wonderful oils!

1. Argan Oil

From luscious locks to sexy skin, this ‘magic’ oil does it all. Used by Moroccans for centuries, the rest of us are now too starting to understand the allure of this fabulous oil.
Argan Oil is packed with essential fatty acids as well as antioxidants, which when applied to your skin or hair instantly revives its appearance by providing a healthy and beautiful sheen.

Argan oil not only offers intense moisturization, but anti-aging benefits too, due to its high concentration of antioxidants. If you use argan oil regularly you will notice a definite improvement in your complexion including improved elasticity and firmness. Argan oil is the perfect choice for you if you have sensitive skin as it is very gentle as well nourishing on the skin. When using argan oil on your skin, make sure to add a few drops to your hair too! It instantly tames frizz, adds sleekness and seals split ends… Oh and did I mention an incredible
shine?

2. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has fast gained a name for itself in the beauty world and it’s not just because you are transported to a tropical island every time you use it! Apart from its delicious tropical smell, coconut oil has a wide range of beauty uses that range from softer skin to sleeker hair to stronger nails! If you are suffering from extremely dry skin then you need a jar of this stuff now!

Coconut oil is also wonderful for your hair as it is one of the few oils that actually penetrates the hair follicle instead of just sitting on the surface, meaning intense hydration from the inside out. Coconut oil as a hair treatment has been proven to strengthen hair, prevent dryness and help it to grow like crazy! It is also wonderful for dry cuticles, as a natural make-up remover (it literally dissolves all dirt and impurities for a deep-down clean), and as a fantastic all-over yummy body scrub when mixed with brown sugar! I’m convinced…now where’s my Piña Colada?

3. Grape Seed Oil

Extracted from the seeds of grapes, this antioxidant rich oil works wonders for all skin types. Grape seed oil contains linoleic acid, which is fantastic for your skin. A few of these benefits include firming the skin, intense hydration, as well as preventing acne due to its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Because of the high levels of antioxidants present in grape seed oil, it is wonderful for preventing and treating the signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles.

4. Olive Oil

Most of us have olive oil, or EVOO oil sitting on our kitchen counters, but if you still think that cooking with it is all its good for then listen up my friends! Olive oil is finding its way into more and more beauty routines every day. If you want softer skin with a beautiful, radiant glow then make olive oil part of your beauty routine too! Closer in chemical structure to the skin’s natural oil than any other oil, it’s easy to understand why this oil is so good for your skin.

Packed with antioxidants as well as vitamin E, olive oil is not only good for moisturizing, but has incredible regenerating properties too making this oil perfect for treating and preventing skin irritations. Make sure to warm up some of this oil next time you treat that special someone to a massage!

5. Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is one of the best oils to use on your skin and here’s why. Jojoba oil is great for you if you have dry and oily, because even though it has fantastic moisturizing properties, it also regulates sebum levels, meaning balanced skin and fewer breakouts. It also has powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, which is good not just for preventing acne, but for treating skin injuries too.

Just as with olive oil and coconut oil, jojoba oil can be used as a makeup remover as well as a head to toe body moisturizer and unlike most store-bought moisturizers, jojoba oil is a natural alternative with no harmful chemicals.

Last but not least, thanks to its waxy like properties, jojoba oil works wonders as split end sealing serum (without nasty silicones!). The oil forms a thin protective layer around the hair strand, that keeps the water locked in, maintaining your locks hydrated and healthy. If you want shiny, manageable and strong hair this is your oil!

6. Rosehip Oil

Rosehip oil is a well-known and widely used natural oil in skincare formulations, loved for its regenerative and age-defence properties. Rosehip Oil is extracted from the seeds and fruit of wild rose bushes and is rich in vitamins, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants.

Rosehip Oil is a proven and effective age defence oil thanks to the abundant presence of Vitamins A and C. Vitamin A is well-known for promoting cell turnover to reduce the appearance of fine lines while smoothing the skin’s texture, and we all know that Vitamin C is nature’s natural brightener and an essential for boosting collagen production.

In addition to some serious age-defence benefits, Rosehip Oil is deeply hydrating and can assist with replenishing moisture, soothing irritated skin and supporting a healthy skin barrier. It can help with fading scars and stretch marks while calming irritation that comes with skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea and dermatitis.

7. Marula Oil

Native to Southern Africa and extracted from the kernels of the Marula Tree, Marula Oil contains essential fatty acids and antioxidants such as Vitamin E and C. Both of these Vitamins are essential for the maintenance of healthy skin and work to prevent free radical damage.

Its lightweight and non-greasy texture also make it an excellent moisturiser as it absorbs easily—promoting smoother, more hydrated skin without feeling heavy or greasy. An ideal oil for all skin types, Marula Oil is unlikely to cause breakouts or irritation. Mature and dry skin types will benefit from its antioxidant rich profile that will assist to protect against environmental stress while supporting elasticity and collagen production.

Find this incredibly versatile oil in LAMAV’s Marula Oil Cleanser. All skin types can reach for this oil cleanser every night as a first cleanse to remove waterproof makeup and SPF without irritating the skin.

FAQ's

1.Can I use facial oils if I have oily or acne-prone skin?

Yes, absolutely! Oils such as Jojoba and Marula Oil are lightweight, fast absorbing and also have oil balancing and anti-inflammatory properties to support oily and acne prone skin types. It’s best to stay away from heavier oils such as Coconut and Olive Oil with leave on products if you have oily skin as these may cause further congestion.

2. How do I know which oil is right for my skin?

Lightweight, non-comedogenic oils such as jojoba and marula are ideal for oily and acne prone skin, whilst mature and dry skin will generally benefit from most oils including rosehip, jojoba and marula oil.

3. Should I apply facial oil before or after moisturiser?

It depends on how heavy your oil and moisturiser are. Skincare should be applied in order from lightest in consistency to heaviest. For example, if you are using a heavier night cream you would apply your oil first and finish with the night cream to lock everything into the skin before you go to sleep.

4. Are there any side effects of using natural oils?

Natural oils are generally considered low risk when it comes to side effects, however as with any new skincare product, we recommend patch testing to avoid irritation. It’s important to be aware of any allergies you may have before applying oils and avoiding heavier oils on acne prone skin.

5. Can I mix oils with other skincare products?

Yes! If you’re looking for a boost in hydration you can add a couple of drops of your favourite oil to your daily moisturiser to give your skin extra support and glow throughout winter. You can also add a drop of oil to your bb cream or foundation to create a luminous skin tint for a more natural finish on “no-makeup” days.
