Radiant summer skincare tips
There’s nothing quite like glowy, dewy, radiant summer skin. But for most of us, taking care of our complexion during the warmer months, can feel like a full-time job.
The slew of skincare challenges that surface during summer can be complex and varied—from dry, rough skin to sun-damage, ageing and pigmentation. As we all know too, when it comes to dealing with tricky skin concerns, prevention is better than cure. Which is why, we’ve curated your perfect summer skin guide, so you can enjoy a radiant complexion—all season long.
Just as we swap out our heavy winter wardrobe for our summer one—the change of season also provides the perfect opportunity to reset your skincare regime. As studies show that oily skin is far more common during summer, it’s important to give your skin a chance to breathe—opting for more lightweight skincare products. If you usually use a heavy cream cleanser during winter, for example, try a lighter gel or foaming cleanser like our Sweet Orange Balancing Cleanser instead. With naturally-occuring AHA’s from bilberry and sugar cane extracts, this clever cleanser not only helps to promote cellular turnover—but it also soothes and calms the skin thanks to the addition of aloe vera leaf juice. As our skin is more prone to sun damage and dryness during summer, these ingredients work synergistically to reduce redness and reveal a calmer, dewier complexion.
Dry, scaly, rough skin can be an unwelcome symptom of summer skin—but exfoliating regularly can help to slough away any dead skin cells. The key is to find an exfoliant which also incorporates nourishing oils, to help replace any moisture that’s been lost due to prolonged sun exposure. La Mav’s Jojoba Beads & Argan Oil Exfoliating Scrub contains natural sources of vitamin E, which protects the skin against free radicals as well as camellia, macadamia and argan oils to help nourish the skin on a cellular level. But oily skin types can benefit from exfoliating more regularly during summer, too, as sebum production can go into overdrive. Opt for products that include natural fruit acids and AHA’s which gently remove impurities from the surface of the skin while encouraging cell renewal.
Apply sunscreen daily
With studies illustrating that 80 percent of the visible signs of ageing—including fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and lack of firmness—are linked to prolonged UV exposure, there’s no question that applying sunscreen should be the most important step in your skincare regime. But sunscreen doesn’t need to be heavy in order to be effective. Choose an organic, non-toxic sunscreen that incorporates nourishing minerals that you can apply daily before your makeup and if you know you’re going to be outside for long periods of time, wear a hat.
Focus on hydration
During summer our skin has to protect us from an abundance of environmental stressors—which often results in dry or dehydrated skin. To rebalance your complexion and help to preserve its delicate barrier function, locking in moisture is key. The ingredient to look for? Hyaluronic acid. As a humectant, hyaluronic acid has the ability to hold more than 1000 times its weight in water, meaning that when applied to the surface of the skin, it helps to hydrate and moisturise. When used regularly, hyaluronic acid is also shown to improve skin elasticity and improve skin structure. If you need to boost your summer skincare kit, our Hyaluronic Acid Hydra-Max Serum helps to plump and strengthen the skin, while locking in moisture for the ultimate dewy finish. And don’t forget about your inner hydration! Make sure to drink plenty of fresh, filtered water each day and enjoy the abundance of hydrating summer fruits on offer, too.
