If you’re looking to achieve vibrant, glowing skin—it’s time we spoke about adaptogens.
While these powerhouse ingredients have been buzzing about in the wellness world for some time and are praised for their abilities to rebalance the body and assist in its response to stress—it’s only recently that they have begun to really penetrate the skincare realm as well. Given that stress—both environmental and emotional—can contribute to skin ageing, it makes sense that these herbal pharmaceuticals are at last being integrated into topical products, too.
At LAMAV, we are constantly turning to the natural world for inspiration as well as ancient traditions such as Ayurveda where adaptogens have been utilised for centuries. We’ve also found that by combining these potent adaptogens with native Australian bio-actives, we’ve been able to elevate our hardworking formulas even further, delivering results that transform your skin on a cellular level.
Here are a few of our favourite adaptogens—as well as why they are truly superheroes for your skin…
Ashwagandha
Perhaps the most well-known adaptogen, ashwagandha has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years and is predominantly used to support the body as it adapts and responds to stress. However, its rich phytochemical profile means that ashwagandha is also praised for its abilities to support immunity, heart health and combat inflammation.
Containing high levels of antioxidants, ashwagandha is used topically to help support collagen production and fight free radical damage. It is a key ingredient in our Bakuchiol 4% Natural Retinol Alternative formula which is designed to bolster the skin’s structural integrity, slow skin ageing and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Ashwagandha is also a potent antibacterial and antimicrobial, which makes it useful for those with acneic skin types—reducing the appearance of blemishes and combating skin inflammation.
Turmeric
You’ve likely heard of turmeric and its powerful anti-inflammatory properties—especially when consumed internally—but aside from using this spice liberally in the kitchen, it is now also utilised in topical skincare products for its therapeutic benefits.
A potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial, turmeric is often used to assist in skin healing, speed up wound healing and soothe inflammatory skin conditions—including acne and psoriasis. Found in our Glow Beauty Mask, Daily Vitamin C Serum, Rumex Day Cream and Anti Dark Circle Eye Gel, turmeric works to brighten skin and improve tone and texture—reducing the appearance of pigmentation for a brighter, clearer complexion.
In our brand new Wellbeing category, we’ve also included Turmeric Chips in our Brightening Organic Beauty Tea, to combat and calm skin inflammation while also enhancing radiance from within.
Tulsi
Like Ashwagandha, tulsi (also known as ‘holy basil’) is an adaptogenic herb that is most commonly used to combat stress—both internally and externally. However its powerful anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antibacterial compounds make it an excellent supporter of skin healing. Research also shows that tulsi can be used to help fight the effects of free radical damage—which contributes to skin ageing—as well as reducing pigmentation.
Included in our Bakuchiol 4% Natural Retinol Alternative for its protective properties—this antioxidant-rich formula supports skin structure, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and calms skin inflammation.
Gotu Kola
While gotu kola may not be as well known as ashwagandha or tulsi, this super herb is praised for its age-defying abilities. Touted by many as the herb of longevity’, the terpenoids in gotu kola are what provide its therapeutic benefits. Helping to strengthen skin integrity and boost collagen synthesis—this powerful adaptogen firms and tightens skin, improves wound healing and reduces inflammation.
To make the most of its anti-ageing compounds, we’ve included this nourishing ingredient in our Brightening Organic Beauty Tea—a formula which works synergistically to boost dull lacklustre skin and stimulate collagen production.
Ginseng
Another incredible adaptogen widely praised for its anti-ageing compounds is ginseng—used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. With studies showing its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to be beneficial in improving skin tone, texture, boosting collagen synthesis, supporting skin hydration and reducing the effects of photo-ageing and UV-induced skin damage—ginseng is a powerhouse! Which is why it is a key ingredient in our Bakuchiol 4% Natural Retinol Alternative and suitable for all skin types—including ageing and those prone to sensitivity.
